Quickening: Rhythms of Change

Self Mastery is a very personal experience. When conveyed through inspirational stories, others create their own mastery; and that's really good news!

Self Mastery: Reflections are Projections

A couple weeks ago I was misquoted by a local journalist in what could have been a very sensitive portrayal of a man's life and death. When the story was published I was angry the report was so cavalierly presented and very different than what I'd said during the interview. I re-read the article several times over and dove into my dictionary to clarify word meanings, all the while knowing I was gathering ammunition for a great war against misinterpretation and injustice. At best, I was surprised at the way my words had been rearranged; how sentences and quotes had been welded together, creating an entirely different tonal quality to the story I'd offered the day before.

Musings & Meditations

"The only way out of ignorance and out of this dark night of the soul is to be aware of your own being, aware of your own awareness. In that moment when you are aware of your own awareness, everything stops, time stops. Suddenly you are beyond time and beyond space, and a door opens which makes you part of the whole…."

Awareness & Alchemy

Finding the Center of your Head means much more than just locating your brain on a map! Lie on the floor comfortably on your back, relax and just breathe naturally for a few minutes. Allow gravity to gently help your eyes settle deep inside. Your bones are heavy and your muscles melt like chocolate on a warm day. You are NOT getting sleepy; this is an awareness exercise! Begin breathing into your nose noticing how the air becomes sustenance as it moves into the body. This food type energy nourishes the space inside your head. As you exhale, let the breath take away anything foreign. Inhale through your nose, into the Center of your Head, letting the molecules of life force swirl around collecting old energies and thoughts. Exhale down through your spine, into the center of the planet, clearing out anything that does not belong to you in present time. Practice this each day to help you relax, becoming more aware of yourself and your responses to life.

Keystones & Kingpins

For integrating and balancing the brain, try the essential oils of Sandalwood and Frankincense. Place a drop of each on your Brow and Crown Chakras as well as underneath your lower middle back skull (occiput). Young Living carries each of these as single oils, as well as several blends containing both Sandalwood and Frankincense: Three Wise Men, Acceptance, Forgiveness, Gathering, Harmony, Inspiration, Into the Future and Trauma Life. According to documentation at the University of Berlin, the high levels of sesquiterpenes in these oils have the ability to cross the blood brain barrier; coupled with research done by the AMA, this could potentially heal conditions like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis. Use these oils according to the instructions you receive with your purchase. Purchase Essential Oils or learn about these and other similar products.

Conservation Concerns

Recycling Plastic
I reuse my plastic olive bar containers and doggie box container over and over until they break! In fact, I take used containers with me to restaurants and the bulk sections for reuse. I also save plastic produce bags and reuse them at the grocery store as well. Most of the plastic bags and containers I save are reused time and again for up to 6 months!

Plastic does not breakdown, at least not our lifetime, taking 700 years to begin to degrade; and who knows what happens then? Have you heard of the huge plastic dump out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (at the Pacific Gyre -- check out Wikipedia for a detailed description of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, where high winds and intense currents meet, and is purported to be twice the size of Texas! There it sits, caught up in the currents, going nowhere and growing day by day.

Please stop buying plastic water bottles! Get a home filter and fill up a reusable stainless bottle each day. Here is a website with some interesting and scary facts about plastic, in case you want to really confront your comfort zone.

Be conscious and aware! Most of us throw everything into the recycling bin and depending upon where you live, your plastics may or may not be recyclable. In fact, when you throw different plastics into the same container you may, depending on your area recycling protocols, contaminate the bunch and they will never get to the recycling stage, instead being tossed into the regular garbage. Here are a couple links to websites giving guidelines for plastics: How to Recycle Plastic and Recycling at Cleaning101.com. Always, without exception, you must rinse and look at the bottom of the container to know what is recyclable or not. The best action you can take is to call your local refuse and recycling operation to determine what can be recycled in your area. For information on recycling foam and other packaging materials, you can contact the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers to find out more about this type of recycling. The good news is this: many plastics which up until very recently have not been recyclable in most cities, are now undergoing some experimentation in places like the Bay Area. Please call your local waste management company to find out how it works in your area. Meanwhile, if you must buy things in plastic containers, keep washing and reusing them, over and over and over again.

After some of the shock wore off, I started to consider a possibility: the writer's interpretation of the information may have evolved very differently than my intentions. Although it didn't help my angst, I was able to move my attention away from micromanaging the ill-effects of the story and began to explore how something like this happens. This shift in perspective lead me to see my own responsibility in the situation.

When at first I was blaming the reporter for an amateur article and wanted to pursue a correction, later I was surrendering to a begrudging kind of gratitude. It was a master challenge to accept this because my initial reaction was one of immediate and incredible fear about the possibility of being misjudged by those who read the article. I dreamed (generally making things up) of fighting with anyone who might attack me, using most of my mind space that week to strategize my survival in the aftermath of this near death encounter.

Talk about a misinterpretation!! Suddenly the red flags were waving vehemently.

Instead of sending a letter to the editor or charging the doors of the newspaper office in search of the bad guy, which I wanted to do every other second, I finally opened up to the ways that this situation is a reflection of me alone. I altered course to take a higher road telling myself, "don't believe everything you think," and the key question I asked myself was this: "what is hidden from view here?"

Since I didn't really know the answer, I had to trust one would appear. While waiting I wandered around a bit wondering. "Who can say what is true in any given interaction between two or more sources? If common perception --what we see--means we both see the same big redwood tree; and interpretation-- how we see it--relates to what we believe and experience about the tree, is it any surprise that we are often polarized? What lies at the source of this disparity?"

A simple answer came to me. It's a projector.

After realizing there was a big projector online here, I was first able see how the reporter could project onto me the desire for a specific type of story and how it was possible to misinterpret my statements to accommodate this reality. I also remembered similar past situations in my own life and began to experience new and present circumstances in which I was, yet again, misinterpreted! Because it recurred in other aspects of my life, albeit less glaringly, I had to go further down the root tunnel to see where this particular scenario originated, and it was more complicated than a simple direct reflection.

This is especially funny because not only were my direst emotions driven by feeling misinterpreted, my solution was to actively misinterpret other people's possible responses to how I was represented by the media. No one ever said a thing to me! The price is high to keep these old movies in stock and perpetually project them onto the world screen. My recent version of this dynamic consciously preoccupied almost two weeks of my life…and that's not to mention it's tenure in my subconscious and stations in between.

Although very painful, I am about to become much freer because I recognized myself in those outer reflections. This case was a bit complex; I could have chosen continued blame, sustaining a victim vibration which holds the emotional drama in place. After all, there was a truly righteous aspect to the whole story and I might have easily remained on the wrong battlefield. On top of that, even if everyone was secretly judging me afterward, it all still comes from a projection inside of me and from an entirely different set of past experiences. I am truly grateful this writer agreed to play a role in this movie to support my growth!

Ultimately, do you want to be right or self-empowered and co-creative?

Everything we experience can be linked to a projection from inside of us. What we believe are reflections from the outside world are really projections from inside of us onto the world. And even though they originate from within, they are not always directly nor easily interpreted. The story we perceive may only be a preface of what's ready for interpretation as part of our growth. First we must be willing to actually see it, second we must know its source, and then we must interpret it correctly.

It's much easier to do from the seat of your wisdom, a place of neutrality and clarity--the center of your head or mid-brain!
